Solvang, CA - A special bike safety event “Ride-By” for Local Schoolchildren as part of the educational curriculum of the Amgen Tour of California (ATOC) will be provided for Solvang School on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 10am.
Professional cyclists from Columbia-Highroad will ride up on their bikes and meet with 200+ students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades to provide personal insight about cycling, bike safety and their experiences as professional athletes.
WHERE: Solvang Elementary School Gymnasium Parking Lot, corner of Elm & Fourth Place, Solvang
WHEN: Monday, February 9, 2009 at 10:00 AM
WHY: In preparation for the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling road race, a specially developed classroom curriculum has been distributed to fourth- through sixth-grade instructors and students in the 16 California "host" cities selected for the 750-mile race scheduled for February 14-22, 2009.
A free English & Spanish booklet given to students provides information about the state of California, including targeted lesson plans that use cycling to teach math, science and geography.
MORE: Team Columbia-Highroad is the number one cycling team in the world, winning more races in 2008 than any other. The men won 85 races and the women won 68. The roster includes 21 talented young athletes aged 26 and under, making Team Columbia-Highroad the youngest team at the top level of professional cycling. It is an international team of 36 men and women from 18 countries. Their worldwide success includes nine current national champion titles from Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Italy and Norway.
