Santa Ynez, CA - Over 500 people gathered in the parking lot outside the Longhorn Coffee Shop at noon on November 17 to commemmorate Kelli Moniot, owner. Kelli passed away November 3 in Solvang after a tough fight with cancer.

Kelli worked at the Longhorn for over 20 years - first "the feisty waitress", then owner and proprietor since 1996. She is remembered in the many testimonials as the quintessential "Valley Character" - an unforgettable and caring person - part of Santa Ynez Valley's uniqueness. Kelli gave the Longhorn the personality of a family restaurant: family-owned, and you feel like family eating there.

Kelli's personality pervades the Longhorn: Bumper stickers that say "Put a Cowboy in the White House" (I think we know who she voted for!), and the Santa Ynez Valley's greatest collection of John Wayne photos. The Longhorn is a reflection of her personality and her dedication to the Santa Ynez Valley ranchers, cowboys, business people, and "family" who show up every morning at 6AM for breakfast. She is survived by her husband, Mike, and sons Will and Shane.

The comments shared by those attending described the spirit being commemorated:
  • "Kelli wasn't as much concerned with making money as she was about the friends she made."
  • "Kelli even cared about the animals. When she visited the restaurant a few weeks ago, she pointed out the cat dish was empty. *Always* fill the cat dish!."
  • "Take time to share the roses (with people) while they can see them."
Kelli shared the roses with everyone. We'll miss you!

Miss Me... But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the trail and
The sun has set for me. I want no rites
In a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul
Set free? Miss me a little ... but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the good times we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a trek that we all must take
And each must go alone. It's all a part
Of the Master's plan, a step on the trail
To home. When you are lonely and sick of
Heart, go to the friends we know. And bury
Your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me, but let me go.
